“What makes the Sections in Divisions 02–49 so special?”

This week’s SPEC SHORTS concludes our 3-part mini-series with an inside look at Divisions 02–49, commonly referred to as the Technical Trade Sections of the Project Manual. It is in these Sections where product solutions meet performance expectations, and the client requirements are realized by actual products solutions available on the market. In this final chapter, Professor V walks his client through how Trade Sections are tailored from the Scope of Work to deliver project-specific clarity. These Sections aren’t just copy and pasted from previous projects or downloaded from outdated office masters. Whether it’s roofing, flooring, or washroom accessories, the Technical Trade Sections provide more than compliance, they provide insurance that the Specification Writer has reviewed the project parameters and proposed the “Best Product Solution” for the intended use, design, and budget. Every Section is a performance puzzle piece, designed to ensure materials, installation, and workmanship meet the overall design intent. “Division 02–49 isn’t a compiled list of products.
