SPEC SHORTS – (Vol. 2) Issue 18 – May 7, 2025

Write up: Come on… Another delay?!
In this week’s SPEC SHORTS, Professor V. hits a supply snag that sends ripple effects across the project.

We’ve all heard it. “Don’t worry, the shipment is coming soon…”
🧂 Sprinkle in a little blind faith, wait 6 weeks, and 💥 another delay!

In an era of tariffs, disrupted ports, and unpredictable timelines, material availability isn’t a footnote—it’s the headline.

In this issue, Professor V. experiences the domino effect of supply chain disruption firsthand — from empty shelves to slipper-stomping frustration.

What is the Lesson?

  • Availability must be confirmed before the Specification hits the streets for bids.
    • Projects requiring long, phased construction due to complexity and scope, may require flexibility in the design of critical elements.
  • Projects specifying materials manufactured oversees may require stocking of necessary products locally to ensure no shipping delays are experienced.

When Product Specs don’t account for shipping, lead times, or substitution triggers, your “preferred product” becomes a silent liability.

Want fewer design revisions and frantic emails? Spec smart and confirm stock and/or shipping lead times.

Remember – A great product on backorder is just another fancy delay.

Ask before you attach.
